Six years before the first tournament, Lei Fang was saved from a bunch of thugs by a martial artist, Jann Lee. Although she was very grateful for being saved, she felt that she could have handled the situation herself. After that incident, she mastered the art of Tai Chi Quan and sought to prove her strength to Jann Lee. Lei Fang joined the first Dead or Alive Tournament in order to fight Jann Lee, to prove her worth to him. During the tournament she faces him. However, she is defeated by him. This doesn't damper her spirits, however, and she goes on to train herself.

Lei Fang might dress like an undercover prostitute sometimes, but at least she has a pretty cool Kung Fu / Tai Chi Quan style. Her moveset is fluid in some places, especially her throws and counters... but some of her core animations are a bit awkward and stiff, especially for a Tai Chi stylist. Her best moves are easily her "advanced" counter-holds, which not all DOA characters have. If you ask me, Lei Fang's counters are among the best animations in DOA.

Lei Fang's idle stance always irked me a bit... notably the way she swings her arms in the beginning. To me it looks sloppy for Tai Chi, but not terrible. However, Lei Fang does seem weirdly off-balance during some of her moves (due to Tecmo Koei's animation and weird physics). Other than those quirks, Lei Fang was always a decent DOA character and she's evolved fairly well over the years. In the past, perhaps she was outshined by others in the series, but she's come a pretty long way. Her newer taunts & mannerisms in DOA5 / DOA6 were a nice touch.
