Street Fighter 2026 Movie Reveals Stunning 2D Animated Backstory for Ryu and Ken

The upcoming Street Fighter (2026) movie has generated a ton of hype ahead of its October 16th release date. From its exciting casting and nods to the community, to the accurate depictions of Street Fighter II's iconic roster and special moves, this high-octane martial arts flick looks like it will be an entertaining watch for any level of Street Fighter fan. It was revealed yesterday that the live action film will also contain striking animated segments that explore the complex history of its marquee fighters. Paramount dropped a special look featurette confirming that Ryu and Ken's formative flashback sequences will be brought to life using hand-drawn 2D animation crafted by Titmouse.

This artistic choice hits all the right nostalgic notes, utilizing a vibrant 90s-inspired aesthetic that feels remarkably authentic to the source material. Rather than forcing every era of the timeline into live-action, opting for a classic animated style for these sequences is an inspired decision that captures the timeless, legendary martial arts spirit of the franchise. Check out some official Screenshots below showing Ryu, Ken, and Akuma from the animated sequence.

According to official details, these animated segments will dive straight into the deep lore of the iconic duo, exploring how the deep friendship and eventual rivalry between Ryu (played in live-action by Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) slowly deteriorated over time.

The flashbacks also place a heavy emphasis on their shared past under their legendary master, Gouken, while weaving in the looming, ominous threat of Akuma. By tracing the roots of their training and the ideological rifts that drove them apart, the film provides crucial context for the heavy emotional stakes driving the present-day World Warrior Tournament plot.

Adding massive star power and martial arts gravitas to the project, acclaimed actor Don Lee has been officially cast to voice Gouken during these crucial animated sequences. Lee's powerful presence makes him a phenomenal fit to portray the stern yet honorable master who shaped the lives of both fighters and shares a deeply complex history with his own brother, Akuma.

By blending high-energy live-action tournament brawls with these lovingly crafted 2D animated historical flashbacks, the production is shaping up to be a true celebration of arcade history when it hits theaters. Street Fighter (2026) hits theaters on October 16th, 2026. Keep it here on The Fighters Generation for continued coverage.
