KOF XV Anime Short by Masami Obari in Development

Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture (1994) is a cult classic and easily one of the best fighting game anime adaptations ever made. One of the most memorable aspects of the film is the incredible art direction, made possible by legendary Japanese anime director, Masami Obari. During the KOF XV reveal last week, SNK's Yasuyuki Oda and Eisuke Ogura announced that Masami Obari will be returning to the SNK universe to direct a KOF XV anime short, coinciding with the release of the new KOF installment! Details are scarce at the moment, but scroll down to read the original commentary by Oda-san and Ogura-san from the KOF XV reveal about the upcoming anime.

Anime fans who remember Masami Obari's films of the 90's will no doubt be looking forward to his modern take on The King of Fighters. If you're unfamiliar with the art style associated with Obari's animated films (or you're ready to enjoy a quick nostalgia trip ), scroll down to see some iconic box art and screenshots from Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture.

Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture was the spiritual successor of two TV specials, Fatal Fury: Legend of the Hungry Wolf and Fatal Fury 2: The New Battle  both directed by Hiroshi Fukutomi. The 1994 film diverted from the canon storyline of the classic arcade games, focusing on several "new" characters (Sulia, Laocorn, Panni, Hauer, Jamin, Lily, Reiko, etc.) who don't appear in any of the games.

Many classic Garou series veterans make appearances / cameos in the movie as well, including: Cheng Sinzan, Hwa Jai, Kim Kaphwan, Mai Shiranui, Laurence Blood, Big Bear, Jubei Yamada, Duck King, and Billy Kane. Of course... Terry & Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi, and Geese Howard also appear in the 1994 film.

FUN FACT: One of Terry Bogard's costumes in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has him wearing his "metal plated" hat directly based on Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture (and the two prequels previously mentioned).

The most recent anime adaptation of KOF was The King of Fighters: Another Day, released in 2005 and directed by Masaki Tachibana. The 4-chapter series came as a DVD bonus packaged with the Japan version of KOF: Maximum Impact 2. KOF: Another Day also released in the U.S. and was originally planned as a pre-order bonus with KOF: MI2 (KOF 2006), but unfortunately, SNK failed to ship the DVDs at launch (resulting in many fans not receiving their copy). KOF: Another Day can now be viewed on YouTube in its entirety.
