Mortal Kombat 11 DLC Support Ends After 2 Years

On July 2nd, NetherRealm Studios announced they are officially ending DLC support for Mortal Kombat 11 and are currently focused on their next project. What their next project is, or whether or not it's a fighting game, is currently unknown. In the official tweet, NRS clarified that no additional DLC characters will be added to MK11 beyond this point. Mortal Kombat 11 originally launched on April 23rd, 2019. In 2020, the game received two title updates, MK11: Aftermath and MK11: Ultimate adding new characters, including action movie icons such as Terminator T-800, Joker, Spawn, Robocop, and Rambo. Below is the tweet from NRS confirming the news.

Other modern and popular fighting games, such as Street Fighter V and TEKKEN 7, have seen DLC support continue for upwards of 5 years into multiple seasons in part thanks to continued active player support, strong DLC sales, and record-breaking success in eSports worldwide. MK11 sales surpassed 8 million units worldwide, slightly more than SFV (5.5 million) and TEKKEN 7 (7 million), so it may come as a surprise to some fighting game fans that NRS would abruptly end support for the game... and so early.

[UPDATE] As a matter of fact... one fighting game fan by the name of Tommy Gagnon (designer and writer of the Mortal Kombat Kompendium) posted a chart on Twitter uncloaking the rather-shocking visual showing the actual difference in the length of time DLC support has continued (and not-so-continued) for several modern fighting games over the course of 8 years. The chart's creator also wrote a Twitter thread on the topic.

It's a pretty good thread. Click through on Twitter to read it. In the creator's words, "Bandai Namco and Capcom are focused on making the perfect fighting game (kept profitable through more expensive DLC passes with a longer release schedule), while WB Games are mostly focused on how much money they can make as fast as possible," said Tommy. He has a point... it's actually a fair assessment... and to many of us who play fighting games, it's not really news.

Anyhow, recent
"rumors" claiming NetherRealm Studios has acquired the Marvel license to actually develop a new fighting game with characters from the Marvel Universe may have something to do with it... if true. If not a new Mortal Kombat game, most NRS fans will be expecting Injustice 3 as the company's next fighting game.

Stay tuned on Fighters Generation for news on upcoming NRS games.
