Street Fighter Film & TV Rights Acquired by Legendary Entertainment, Movie in the Works

It's been confirmed that a new live-action Street Fighter movie is in the works, as the franchise's film and TV rights have been secured by Legendary Entertainment — the studio behind films such as Dune and the upcoming Dune 2, as well as The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Godzilla, 300, Detective Pikachu, Jurassic World, Kong: Skull Island, Watchmen, Inception, Pacific Rim, Sucker Punch, and Warcraft. A press release confirms that Legendary has struck a deal with Capcom, giving the studio exclusive rights to produce future Street Fighter live-action movies and TV shows in conjunction with Capcom. It's currently unclear how many new projects are being planned beyond the upcoming Street Fighter film, and no additional details regarding the film's cast, production team, or plot are available yet.

The 1994 live-action Street Fighter film starring Jean Claude Van Damme as Guile and Raul Julia as M. Bison lives in infamy. Even though it was very poorly received and considered a "flop" at the time, much like 1993's Super Mario Bros. and the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie, and definitely 2009's Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li with its dismal 3% Rotten Tomatoes rating, some fans have come around to appreciate the ancient film and its memorable quirks more in recent times, alongside the 1995 video game adaptation of the movie, Street Fighter: The Movie
the game.

Video game movies and television adaptations in modern times have fared better than their predecessors. The 2021 Mortal Kombat film, Paramount's Sonic movies, HBO's The Last of Us, and the new 2023 Super Mario Bros movie are all examples that compelling (or at least watchable) video game movie adaptations can be done successfully in modern times. Considering Legendary's vibrant film catalogue, one would hope that their upcoming Street Fighter adaptation is as polished and well-received as some of their past productions.

Since its inception in 1987, the Street Fighter series has sold over 49 million units worldwide, becoming one of the most well-known and best-selling video game franchises of all time. It achieved such popularity not only through the games themselves, but quite a few television, movie, and animation spin-offs. With a film (and possibly more) on the way, the Street Fighter series has never been in a better place! The highly-anticipated next installment of the long-running franchise, Street Fighter 6, arrives June 2nd, 2023 on Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Xbox Series X|S.

Regarding the upcoming Street Fighter film by Legendary Entertainment, Capcom themselves confirmed the partnership and upcoming project on social media. See @StreetFighter's official tweet above.

Last but not least, you all be sure to have yourselves a very lovely... Tuesday. Thanks for reading the article! Keep it here on The Fighters Generation for future updates and continued coverage of this developing story.
