Capcom Fighting Collection Won't Increase Chances of Reviving Dormant IPs, Says Capcom Producer

Earlier this week, Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto sat down with Game Informer's John Carson for an interview all about Capcom Fighting Collection releasing next month on June 24th, 2022. In the interview, Matsumoto reveals some new information about the 10-game compilation, including which specific versions of the games are being ported to consoles and Steam to give players the best possible experience. Matsumoto also gave a few reasons behind Capcom's choice to include some of the specific titles featured in the package. In addition to the first-ever console release of Red Earth, Matsumoto said he's excited for fans to experience games like Super Gem Fighter and Super Puzzle Fighter II with the new rollback-netcode-enhanced online and Training modes.

In the interview, JC asked producer Matsumoto if the release of Capcom Fighting Collection will possibly increase the chances for a revival of dormant series like Darkstalkers, Red Earth, or Cyberbots... a great question we might add. Unfortunately, it's not the answer most Capcom fans would want to hear. "We do not think that this will necessarily increase the possibility of these series being revived," said Matsumoto.

On the bright side of things... Matsumoto mentioned that Capcom actually did some research on which versions of the games had the largest competitive player base — specifically the versions that have been used for tournaments in Japan over the decades. Once again, all 10 games featured in Capcom Fighting Collection come with online modes with Rollback Netcode to boot, so serious players looking to get some real competition will have the best possible experience while playing these versions listed below:

  • Hyper Street Fighter II: Japan 040202 / USA 040202

  • Super Gem Fighter Minimix: Japan 970904 / USA 970904

  • Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo: Japan 960531 / USA 960620

  • Red Earth: Japan 961121 / USA 961121

  • Cyberbots: Japan 950420 / USA 950424

  • Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors: Japan 940705 / USA 940818

  • Night Warriors: Darkstalker's Revenge: Japan 950302 / USA 950406

  • Vampire Savior: Japan 970519 / USA 970519

  • Vampire Hunter 2: Japan 970929

  • Vampire Savior 2: Japan 970913

The Japan-only spin-offs of Vampire Savior, Vampire Savior 2 and Vampire Hunter 2 are also included in Capcom Fighting Collection and feature slightly different character rosters and gameplay mechanics. The ports in Capcom Fighting Collection are also the first localized versions of these titles in the West.

Even though the producer stated that Capcom Fighting Collection won't directly lead to a revival of Darkstalkers, Matsumoto did expressed Capcom's goal to revitalize the community with some of the new materials and artwork featured in the title, along with fans experiencing the games for the first time.

As previously reported, Capcom Fighting Collection will contain over 500 Gallery Items for players to unlock, including Art Galleries with never-before-seen Concept Artwork and Design Documents. In addition, the game will feature a BGM Player with over 400 tracks, Enhanced Features / EX Settings, Training Mode, Save Mid-Game, and Rollback Netcode-enhanced online play for ALL titles with Ranked, Casual, and Lobby Matches.

Capcom Fighting Collection will be released June 24th, 2022 on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One for $39.99.
