Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons Announce Trailer, Coming Summer 2023

We don't always cover beat-em-up games... but the legendary Double Dragon series has roots in the origins of the fighting genre dating back to 1987. Today, publisher Modus Games and developer Secret Base announced "Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons" is coming in Summer 2023 to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The 2D sprite-based title features co-op Tag Team gameplay and 13 unlockable playable characters. Below, watch the Announce Trailer and also check out the first official poster artwork and screenshots for the upcoming beat-em-up title.

Arc System Works licensed the intellectual property to Modus Games for the new title. The game's storyline is as follows: "New York City in the year 199X: the city has been devastated by nuclear war. Its citizens fight for survival as riots, crime, and chaos flood the streets. Criminal gangs terrorize what remains as they vie for dominance. Unwilling to endure these conditions any longer, young Billy and Jimmy Lee take it upon themselves to reclaim their city."

In Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons, players earn "cash" by performing a Special KO on opponents. Additionally, health boosts can be activated by performing "Crowd Control" moves — which beat-em-up fans will immediately be familiar with. Players can spend their cash at the end of each stage to buy character upgrades.

Playable characters who appear in the announce trailer include Billy, Jimmy, Marian, and Uncle Matin. It's also highly likely that Abubo (teased at the very end of the trailer) will be one of the 13 playable characters, in addition to being an opponent and/or boss.

Fighting games based on the iconic beat-em-up series include Double Dragon (1995) which was published by SNK and developed by Technos, as well as Rage of the Dragons (2002), published by SNK Playmore and developed by BrezzaSoft, Noise Factory, and Evoga Entertainment.
