Mortal Kombat 12 Teaser in 30th Anniversary Video

On May 1st, Mortal Kombat series co-creator and NRS chief creative officer Ed Boon tweeted a 2-minute Mortal Kombat 30th Anniversary video featuring members of the NetherRealm Studios development team thanking fans for their support over the past 3 decades. At the end of the video, Ed Boon himself dropped the first ever teaser for the next Mortal Kombat game... rumored to be Mortal Kombat 12 (actually Mortal Kombat 1). The "teaser" is a highly-detailed animation showing an hourglass and grains of sand falling downward — potentially a reference to the continuation of MK11's storyline. Watch the full video and teaser via Ed Boon's tweet, below.

Since the 2010s, Ed Boon has been known to tweet cryptic messages and teasers about upcoming releases. Since then, NetherRealm Studios has released Injustice: Gods Among Us, Mortal Kombat X, Injustice 2, and Mortal Kombat 11. Back in March 2023, Ed Boon tweeted the word "tick" a total of twelve times... heavily hinting at Mortal Kombat 12's looming arrival. The hourglass and sand motif appears to go along with this theme.

In February 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery's executive vice president of global investor strategy revealed during an earnings call that Mortal Kombat 12 is set to release this year, setting up 2023 to be a massive year for fighting games — with Street Fighter 6 releasing June 2nd and TEKKEN 8 on the horizon (speculated to launch in 2024). Keep it here on Fighters Generation for continued coverage.
