Kabuki,
a sumo wrestler from a Nintendo arcade game called Armwrestling(1985)
shares the same Kabuki face paint as E.
Honda. This might've been a popular
gimmick in Japan at the time so it could be a coincidence, or was Kabuki actually
inspiration for E. Honda's design? It's possible but I'm not sure you can
confirm it without argument.
Cervantes
& Barbossa (Submitted by
Jassem Mohammad)
Both
Captain
Barbossa from Pirates of the Caribbean and Cervantes from Soul
Calibur are convincing undead evil pirates. Both great characters on
their own!
Freddy
Krueger & Choi
Clearly,
SNK based Choi
Bounge's gimmick off of 80's horror icon, Freddy Krueger (who
ironically appeared in a fighting game of his own many years after
Choi's debut, that being Mortal
Kombat 9). Ironically enough, I've always hated both characters equally!
Never been a fan of horror movies nor cared.
But seriously... what's scarier than Freddy Krueger himself? ...Midget Freddy
Krueger!
Not for me. On that note, you gotta wonder what SNK devs were even
thinking at the time. Choi is probably one of the least-successful and
least-liked KOF characters of all time.
Rosette
& Bridget (Submitted by James G.)
Guilty
Gear XX's Bridget
is loosely based off of Rosette Christopher from Chrono Crusade,
the visual design at least. They share very similar clothing styles /
color scheme, and their names even have a similar
ring. For the record, Guilty Gear XX was released in 2002 while the
Chrono Crusade manga was released in 1999.
Trowa
Barton & Yang (Submitted by Leona)
Trowa
Barton, the young pilot from Gundam Wing and the Kung-fu
rollerblading kid from Street Fighter
III obviously share the same hairstyle and even personality to some
extent. I don't know much about Gundam Wing, but I assume Trowa Barton is
an excellent pilot or whatever, because Yang
is definitely an excellent Street Fighter characters.
Duo
Maxwell & Yun
Duo
Maxwell, also from Gundam Wing, shares the same hairstyle and body
type as Yang's brother, Yun; confirming Capcom based Yun & Yang's
hairstyles off of Duo's & Trowa's.
Iori
Yagami & DEXTERA (Submitted by
Jadewing)
Dextera from Kiddy Grade
(2002) looks quite similar to Iori Yagami from King of Fighters.
Considering the fact that the KOF series (and Iori as a character
alone), were significantly popular in Japanese pop culture by the year
2000. Iori was pretty much a nearly-retired rock star by 2002. That
said, all things point to this random anime character being heavily
inspired by Iori.
Algol &
Vigo (Submitted by Kaboom Kid)
Unless
you're a movie buff... it's unlikely you'll remember Wilhelm
von Homburg as "Vigo" in Ghostbusters II — who looks nothing short of an
older, washed up, and less powerful Algol from SoulCalibur IV.
