Ramon grew up as a poor kid in Mexico,
but was inspired by famous pro wrestlers who kept him going. Later in his life, he became a famed wrestler and
earned lots of money, much of which he donated to charity. Ramon is a generally friendly guy who loves playing with children and flirting with women. One day, Ramon was approached by Vanessa
who was looking for teammates to enter The King of Fighters 2000 tournament. She also presented him with a Lucha Libre mask as a gift.
Thinking he
could broaden his horizons, Ramon joined Vanessa to enter KOF2000 and soon became infatuated with her (a crush that would last for many years to come). Eventually, Ramon and Vanessa, along with their third team member
Seth, helped K' and his team take down Zero. The following year, they teamed up with Iori, which didn't
work out for them very well.
Many of Ramon's mannerisms and attacks are based on real-life Japanese wrestler, Tiger Mask. The blue Lucha Libre mask Ramon is holding in his KOF 2001 artwork is based on Mexican wrestler Blue Demon.

Ramon is a cool tribute to Lucha Libre, a style that hadn't been done in KOF until Ramon arrived. His
personality and charismatic 2D sprite animations brought something unique to KOF2K and future 2D installments of the series. However, I can't say I'm a big fan of his outfit / clothing design. I think SNK could've done more with his look. I think it would've been more
appropriate if he looked more Mexican? Or perhaps wore a Lucha mask? I dunno, Ramon just looks like a punk...
and he does a pretty good job at being annoying in gameplay. Ramon should take some notes from
King.
While Ramon has his cool moments during gameplay, he's
definitely a goofball. His moveset is fun-to-use if you learn him, but compared to other fighting game wrestlers (and other
KOF
characters), Ramon comes up a bit short (he's literally short, too). His KOF14 revamp wasn't bad, but didn't change my opinion on him... his new animations in 3D are slightly awkward, and he
doesn't have any "big moves" as a fighting game wrestler. Contrary to his loud clothing style, he actually lacks excitement and flash IMO. His one-sided love obsession with
Vanessa is pretty funny at least.
