Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls

PREVIEW
Marvel Studios, Arc System Works, and PlayStation Studios have announced Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls — a 4V4 fighting game with a vibrant Japanese-inspired art style starring Marvel's iconic characters. So far, Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, Storm, Dr. Doom, Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan), and Starlord have been confirmed as playable characters in the announce trailer.

Gorgeously reimagined designs with strong anime influence.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls features a realtime 4-v-4 tag-team gameplay system consisting of one primary fighter and three assist characters per team. The more traditional "active tag mechanic" will reintroduce ideas for the previous 2-v-2 and 3-v-3 setups that were popularized by high-level competition in the Marvel vs. Capcom series fighting games. Stages will also encompass multiple areas that are seamlessly transitioned between if match conditions such as combos and hard knockbacks are initiated. Every character will have Normal, Special and Unique attacks that respectively scale in damage, drawing on abilities featured in the comic books, as well as a cinematic Ultimate Skill. Furthermore, the game will feature Classic and Simple controls options.

Holy smokes. What timeline are we even on?

Sony Interactive Entertainment's interest in creating a new first-party fighting game sparked their eventual approach to Marvel Games, following their highly-successful collaboration on the Marvel's Spider-Man series by Insomniac Games. Afterwards, Sony asked Arc System Works to the develop the game with Marvel's approval. The team aims to develop a game with an easily-approachable system for newcomers but also depth that will satisfy the competitive scene looking for depth and longevity. The game's roster will be comprised of major Marvel characters as well as more obscure selections who haven't appeared in previous Marvel fighting games. The game was officially announced in June 2025. Fighting Souls is the first new Marvel-based fighting game since Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite (2017).

We need more X-Men. Storm! You know what to do.

Like previous Arc System Works titles such as Dragon Ball FighterZ (2018) and Guilty Gear -STRIVE- (2021), Fighting Souls features stages that encompass multiple distinct areas with visual iconography drawn from the Marvel Universe, accompanied by stage transitions that take place when a combo or high-damaging move is initiated in the corner of the arena, similar to the "Wall Break" mechanic featured in Strive.

BOTTOM LINE

First Impression: The groundbreaking moment when Arc System Works announced a 4-vs-4 tag team Marvel fighting game before Capcom. What a time to be alive! Capcom has been sleeping on the Marvel series since the disappointing MVC: Infinite (either by ignoring it or struggling to regain licenses), and alas, Arc System Works shocked the world and actually beat Capcom to it before (a potential announcement of) Marvel vs. Capcom 4. Could you imagine if Capcom also releases MVC4 and both games exist at the same time? Marvel Rivals is a thing... so. It's possible.

What a wild time to be a fighting game enjoyer. Truly. It's going to be very exciting to this old school Marvel / MVC fan to witness each and every character reveal and new playstyle coming to Marvel Token. The anime-inspired designs are clearly sick and the final product should dazzle our eyes in a new way that only Arc System Works can bring. I'm very excited to see ASW's take on Marvel's iconic characters. I'm saying it now... Arc System Works can save Marvel. Marvel needs it right now.

Imagine being the devs of this game and creating the character movesets, knowing the legacy of the MVC ones. Of course certain characters like Spider-Man will have basic moves like Web Launch (Hadouken)... right? It'll be different of course, and we'll see completely new moveset designs for all of our favorites. Super excited for this one, guys! Please stay tuned for future content.
